Happy Christmas and all the best for 2012 to all our Club Members.

The Christmas Turkey Event

The Christmas Turkey Event, sponsored by Millar Meats went ahead on Tuesday night at Irvinestown Tennis Club in spite of the wintry conditions.

The wind, sleet and cold did not deter the twenty four hardy (or foolhardy) players as they took to the courts in this final event of the clubs Twentieth Anniversary year. John Maguire, Club President and Wendy Eaton Club Captain had scheduled play so that no pair were on court long enough for frostbite to set in and its fair to say that the craic on the night was better than the standard of play.

The strong winds blowing across the courts, combined with sleety rain made for unpredictable shots with neither server nor receiver being able to read where the ball might go. Players waiting their turn to go on court took the opportunity to peruse the photographic display of the clubs twenty year history which John had put together for the Anniversary Ball, enjoying finding their younger selves and members who have moved away from the town. George Beacom and Bawnacre staff had provided a wonderful array of hot food and drinks which were most welcome to help thaw out those coming off court and insulate those going on.

The plate event was won by Kathleen Maguire and Ronan McGuinness, runners up Brendan King and Breege McCusker and in the main event Maggie Britton and Anthony McCaughey defeated Brendan McGuinness and Kate Heaver.

The sponsor Steven Millar of Millar Meats, was unable to attend due to a prior engagement so Wendy Eaton and John Maguire made the presentations on his behalf, expressing appreciation to all who had played and those who came along for the night. John expressed sincere thanks to the sponsor and to George Beacom, Bawnacre staff and FDC for the tremendous support given all year and the refreshments on the night.

In response, George was generous in his comments about the long and harmonious relationship between the Club and FDC and expressed his personal satisfaction about the friendships created over the years with club members He paid particular tribute to John's commitment to establishing and developing a tennis club in Irvinestown which we can all be proud of.
